In light of a monolithic corporate culture with ever-increasing ownership consolidation, and the recent FCC crackdown on everything even remotely controversial, UCLARadio.com's mission as independent media to provoke its listeners has become even more urgent and, indeed, vital to a social dialogue. UCLARadio.com is committed to the finest programming to inform and entertain UCLA and the world at large, and to offering UCLA students and staff the opportunity to participate in the creation and delivery of this content. Student radio at UCLA began as KCLA in the basement of Dykstra hall in 1962. Once ASUCLA (still the station's owner) took the station under its wing, put it into the back of Ackerman Grand Ballroom (still the station's location), and bought it a carrier current transmitter, the call letters became KBRU, KUCW, and finally KLA on 820 AM in the 60s. Through the 80s and early 90s, KLA could be found at 830 AM. Eventually, the station made the switch to Low-Power FM (using both carrier current and regular transmitter) and was also distributed by a local cable company on several bands. The FCC literally pulled the plug on KLA 91.9 FM's signal in 1999, thrusting student radio at UCLA into its true home: the Internet.
UCLARadio.com broadcasts live over the Internet from Ackerman Grand Ballroom on the University of California campus in Los Angeles. UCLARadio.com is an enterprise of ASUCLA's Student Media, the organization responsible for all of UCLA's student-run media including the Daily Bruin.
